Launch of the Jade's Law Equivalent in Northern Ireland Campaign
The official launch of the Jade’s Law Equivalent campaign in Northern Ireland is now underway, marking an important step forward in extending vital legal protections across all parts of the UK and Ireland.
The launch took place at the historic Guildhall in Londonderry/Derry, where the Mayor extended a warm welcome and expressed gratitude for bringing such a significant and meaningful campaign to the city. Recognition was also given to the progress already achieved in England and Wales, highlighting the growing momentum behind this cause.
Delivering a keynote speech of approximately 20 minutes, Edwin Duggan outlined why this legislation is so important for people across Northern Ireland. Drawing on nearly four years of dedicated work, he explained how he developed the original framework that was later adopted at Westminster. He also referenced collaboration with campaigners in the Republic of Ireland, where similar proposals have been shaped using the same foundation. This leaves Northern Ireland as the remaining part of the region yet to benefit from equivalent legislation — something this campaign aims to change.
The speech addressed perspectives from across the community, resonating with a diverse audience and reinforcing the shared importance of this issue, regardless of background or political identity.
An online petition was officially launched during the conference and has already seen remarkable support. Within just two days, participation levels have proportionally exceeded those achieved during the entire UK-wide campaign in 2022 — a powerful indication of public backing and the urgency of the cause.
Members of the public, including the family of Amy Doherty, were present at the event. Their attendance was in a personal capacity, and care has been taken to ensure no association is made that could impact ongoing legal proceedings. During the visit, Edwin offered his support and condolences, including signing the Book of Condolence at the Guildhall in recognition of their loss.
Following the launch, discussions with local organisations and members of the public led to the formation of a dedicated working group to drive the campaign forward within Northern Ireland. This newly formed team brings together passionate individuals committed to achieving meaningful change, and it is a privilege to work alongside them.
Plans are already in place for continued collaboration, including regular visits to monitor progress and maintain momentum. A return visit is scheduled for mid-June, alongside ongoing communication with all those involved.
