Edwin Duggan reflects on New York visit and 9/11 remembrance

Human rights advocate and knife crime campaigner Edwin Duggan has reflected on an emotional visit to New York, where he attended commemorations marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Edwin paid particular tribute to the 67 British people who lost their lives, joining others in remembering the victims and recognising the lasting impact on their families.

During the day, he spoke with people who had lost loved ones, hearing their experiences and reflecting on the resilience of those whose lives were changed forever.

“The entire day was a demonstration of what humans are capable of in the face of adversity; the day was both heartwarming and emotional,” Edwin said.

“As a human rights advocate, I felt humbled to be amongst those who had lost those they loved so much.”

Looking ahead to future discussions

The visit had also been intended as an opportunity to explore an exchange of ideas on knife crime prevention with the New York City Police Department. However, Edwin explained that the security demands surrounding the anniversary commemorations took precedence, and those discussions did not take place.

He now intends to seek a meeting with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to discuss the possibility of future collaboration and sharing approaches to prevention.

Recent fatal knife violence in Times Square also prompted reflection during his visit, reinforcing his belief in the importance of learning from experiences beyond the UK.

While the trip unfolded differently from his original plans, the conversations with bereaved families left a lasting impression. For Edwin, the anniversary was a powerful reminder of both the enduring effects of tragedy and the hope people can find in supporting one another.
